First impression of Greenland: WHITE

I’ve waited for this very moment for more than three months.

After I decided to come to work in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital city, I’ve done some research about the country, well, mostly about the weather. For god’s sake, it’s GREENLAND!

The temperature numbers didn’t really mean anything to me because I couldn’t imagine how cold that would be, even though I might have experienced it myself when I was visiting Tromso in February back in 2005. And even when my research says it would be like 5 in Celsius, I didn’t really believe it. The fact that I don’t know what to expect just made me scared, I guess.

No preparation seemed perfect. Boarding the plane that will take me to Kangerlussuaq, the gateway to Greenland, I was wearing a thermal, beige cashmere turtle neck, blue windshield Norwegian sweater, black Northface knee-length 600 fill down parkar, and lamb furred leather coat that I just got in Buenos Aires a few weeks ago. (Well, honestly, I didn’t mean to wear two coats, but I was kind of forced to do so as the overweight fee is sky-high.)

As nearing to the K-place, the pilot announced the outside temperature was -20 in Celsius, or -4 in Fahrenheit. I nearly shouted to myself “-20?!” A lady who was sitting next to me smiled and nodded, “Yes, it’s very cold.”

The plane finally landed on the land of Greenland, or more adequately “Whiteland.” Everything was white. I mean, everything. I’m reminding you, it’s April. The air was crispy, super fresh. And cold. But not as extreme as I had expected. I might have over prepared.

You know what? I think I can live here.
